Duets – When will it be over?

You know, I ask myself that question above every week. But 'Duets' is like a train wreck. I have to rubberneck. If for nothing else than to appreciate Kelly Clarkson's voice and fuel my dislike for Jennifer Nettles. Ya follow? Of course you do.

- Season 1, Episode 7 - "Favorite Standards"

Oh, my sweet summer child friends who are still watching TV with me. It’s good to know you’re out there. Some of us are diehards, no? The heck with sitting on porches and enjoying the stars (there’re misquitos out there.) Who needs to catch reruns? What a waste of time. We forge ahead into hiatus programming that would make a wolf turn tail and head for the trees. We’re the true television warriors. Our love of the medium keeps us tuning into shows like Duets.

I have to say at this juncture that, in real life, I’m actually very nice. I deal with women who complain all day with a smile. Sometimes my cat bites me for no reason and I don’t kill her. I just give her another dose of Prozac. I have trials and tribulations. People bug me. Loud noises bug me. So my angst has to come out somewhere. Thus? My reviews of this show. I keep coming back because it’s deliciously bad. (See Cate’s comment on my last post … super funny, and she agrees.)

Let’s hash. …

From right out the box tonight, I was rolling my eyes. The Jennifer Nettles/Robin Thicke version of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” was so corny and overly dramatic that I said out loud “Are you Kidding?” Then I sat back in my comfy blue chair and chortled. On a cruise ship? It maight have worked. Or maybe I would have gone for more shrimp.

It took quite a few minutes, but “host” Quduss finally got around to telling us that as a result of our votes that Olivia Chisholm was eliminated. Yep. I knew that. I was surprised though, that Bridget was in the bottom two with her. I like the girl.

Anyway, as we rolled along we saw the final four perform.

Bridget Carrington and John Legend: Gave us a version of “Unforgettable” that I’ve already forgotten. I’ve never been wild about this tune, and although John was smooth on the Nat King Cole parts, I found this to be Bridget’s most lackluster song to date.

The judges completely disagreed with me. Huh. Well, what do I know? Maybe I was distracted by her electric yellow dress.

Next up? Jennifer and protege J Rome: I’m reiterating. The judges need to stop telling me that J Rome is going to win this thing. I mean, why should I even vote then? Why should I watch, if J Rome (what’s wrong with the name Jerome?) has it sewn up?

Here’s another thing. He’s good, but he’s not as fan freaking tastic as the “superstars” keep gushing. (I’m eyeballing you, Kelly Clarkson.) He sang that Billy Holiday song with absolutely no feeling or soul.

And do not get me started on Jennifer Nettles. Did she really grab her pregnant belly in ecstacy when she sang the words “God Bless the Child?” Good golly.

Lest you’re tired of me complaining, there was a bright spot; Kelly and John Legend’s interpretation of “You Don’t Know Me.” Amazing song and a really good and understated performance. Thank goodness for that.

The rest of the show was pretty much what you’d expect. John Glosson did another slow over the top number with Jennifer. They meaningfully screamed in each other’s faces. Kelly said she couldn’t hear him and she thought he had mic problems. I envied her.

And lastly, we had another dull showing by Kelly’s pick Jason Farol. This kid is done next week. He’s not a bad singer. He just can’t sell it, if you know what I mean.

On to next week with the show I love to hate.

You really are an IDIOT!!! You need to stop blogging about music when you NOTHING about it! How can you say he sang that song with no feeling, you must not have been watching the same show!!!!Stop hating on J ROME!!!! This is who is he!!! and because AMERICA loves him, You dont have too! Trust and believe whether he wins or NOT he is already a STAR!

To each his own, sweet savour. J Rome’s eyes were as dead as a shark’s, and no. He did absolutely not sing with feeling. Listen to Billie’s version and compare. You like him. I don’t. Opinions are fun!
Thanks for commenting.

Tara, there was nothing on last night, so I stopped at this. It was sooo boring. I love Kelly Clarkson so her singing is a highlight, but Robin is so annoying and Jennifer is right behind him on the annoyance scale. I couldn’t make it though the whole show..maybe it was just the big band music??

Sadly Toni, it wasn’t the big band music. I actually enjoyed the band last night.
It was for the other reasons you said. The boring and annoying parts.

Tbh, I started watching Duets b/c of Kelly. I can’t get enough of her powerhouse vocals. J Rome and the fat dude are pretty good singers, whether or not anyone think they have soul..but like Jennifer pointed out, Jason’s definitely up there – being he’s the most marketable contestant with the teen girls. I agree…with most of the peeps that the show’s a little dull.

I enjoy the show. Just not having non-singers or record executives, particularly nasty British record executives judging on the show makes it much better. And then you have professional singers added to the amateurs which means the performance level goes up.

But is certainly hasn’t caught on like the other singing shows.

This show does have some elements that are left to be desired simply because I don’t think the amateur singers they chose have enough know how to pull in the viewers or the judges. Some of the contestants are pretty weak but with the singing judges it works. Nonetheless I am a fan of Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Robin Thicke so that’s enough reason for me to watch the show. I’m at work right now so I made sure to set my DVR but a Dish co-worker suggested downloading the remote access app for iPad. It allows me to stream live TV or anything I’ve recorded through the Sling Adapter and it works great with my Hopper too. So I’m going to be spending my lunch break catching up on tonight’s show and I think I might do that for the rest of the season. My guess is that Bridget is going home today.
