Tragic movie deaths, minus the hashtag

We at CliqueClack Flicks took a cue from Twitter and decided to create a post revolving around movie deaths that had an impact on us. Weigh in with yours. (SPOILER ALERT!)

One of the inevitable consequences of watching a really good movie, one that’s meaningful and hits home, is that you’re often going to run into death. And yesterday, #tragicmoviedeaths was trending on Twitter. So we at CliqueClack Flicks thought we’d take this rather morbid opportunity to brainstorm some memorable movie deaths.

Those characters who were taken before their time, or to whom you just weren’t ready to say goodbye, are some of the reasons we remember these movies so vividly. Add some of your own in the comments!

WARNING: SPOILERS TO FOLLOW …

Rachel: Some standouts for me include Hilary from Beaches, Susan Sarandon’s character from Stepmom, the wife from Up, and Mufasa from The Lion King (stole that one from a Top Tweet). When I was eleven and My Girl came out, all the girls in my class who saw it were really upset when Macaulay Culkin’s character died.

Here are some tweets from CCTV’s Janey, which I got permission to use:

@citizenjaney: Debra Winger in Terms of Endearment. I cry every single time. Bonnie Blue Butler and Melanie Hamilton in Gone With The Wind. Oh and Ellen and Gerald O’Hara too. Plus Frank Kennedy.

Michael: My contributions would be:

– Count Dooku from Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith (decapitated with two light sabers by Anakin Skywalker)
– Ben Sanderson (Nicholas Cage) from Leaving Las Vegas (drinks himself to death)

Chuck: Bambi‘s mother!

Deb: Nemo‘s mother! Disney is twisted!

Bob: How about Wash in Serenity? That was a particularly cruel Whedon death. Also, Li Mu Bai in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon crushed me at the end of that movie.

Keith: One that comes to mind for me is Pvt. Stanley Mellish from Saving Private Ryan. Oof that was hard to watch.

Katie: I wonder if we’re going for most tragic or most gruesome? (I didn’t exactly shed a tear for Count Dooku, you know?) As for most tragic, how about Shaun’s mom in Shaun of the Dead?

Chuck: Shaun’s mom, Barbara. That was very sad.

Let’s hear your comments! What are the most memorable movie deaths, in your opinion?

Littlefoot’s mother in The Land Before Time. Oh that was devastating.

I know! The kids’ movies are the worst! I still love that song “If We Hold On Together” from that movie.

Damn, I forgot about Littlefoot’s mom when we were talking about this. Yeah, talk about a scene I always fastforwarded through on the VCR!
