Visit Ripper Street on DVD and Blu-ray this week

If you enjoyed BBC America’s Copper, you will definitely want to check out Ripper Street — a better show, in my opinion. Baltimore Ravens fans can relive their Super Bowl victory this week, and if you missed Fox’s short-lived The Mob Doctor, now is your chance to catch up with the entire series. For kids of all ages, we’ve got a couple of Batman titles, and a whole collection of Scooby-Doo on Blu-ray! Classic TV fans can look back at The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction, Doctor Who, Hercules and Xena, while Brit TV aficionados can collect the complete Foyle’s War series. Oscar-winning Life of Pi sails onto home video

The Oscar-winning Life of Pi leads this week’s new home video releases, with more 3D movies — Rise of the Guardians, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away, Spiders — in the mix. If you’re a fan of Alfred Hitchcock films, be sure to check out the Oscar and Golden Globe nominated Hitchcock (as well as the Hitchcock collection released this week on Blu-ray). The big news this week really is the release of Who Framed Roger Rabbit on Blu-ray for the first time, as well as cult classic Willow. Disney is releasing some past animated gems on Blu-ray this week, and the Criterion Collection finally unleashes The Blob on Blu-ray! Don your bonnet for Easter Parade on Blu-ray

We recently reviewed Warner Brothers’ collection of musicals on DVD, and pointed out a title or two that seemed conspicuous by their absence in the set. One title even we overlooked was the classic MGM musical Easter Parade, but Warner Brothers apparently had a reason for that omission. That reason is now crystal clear — literally — with the new Blu-ray release of the musical. And, as usual, Warners has done another superlative job with the film’s restoration for the high def presentation.

If you’re unfamiliar with the 1948 musical, the story itself is fairly simple. Don Hewes (Fred Astaire) and Nadine Hale (Ann Miller) are a successful vaudeville dance team, but Nadine decides to break up the act to pursue her own career path. Hewes, in an attempt to prove that he was the one who made Nadine a star (and make her jealous at the same time), picks the first girl he finds in a chorus line to groom as his next dance partner. While Hannah Brown (Judy Garland) is a little rough around the edges, she proves to be a quick study and the new team are a hit. Don begins to fall in love with Hannah, but wants to keep the partnership strictly professional. Hannah believes he is still in love with Nadine, and her suspicions seem to be confirmed when he dances with Nadine in a nightclub floor show. Will jealousy split up the new team? It’s an MGM musical … what do you think?

Grave-robbing is at its finest in Tomb Raider

As a loyal Tomb Raider fan and follower since day one back in 1996 I can honestly say that while the series has had its highs, there was sadly more than a fair share of lows. Why? Well, that’s because after years of advancement and breakthroughs in gaming technology the Tomb Raider franchise has had a hard time adapting its rather primitive and archaic gameplay formula to the modern conventions of today’s mainstream video games. The Tomb Raider games were simply stuck in the past while the gaming industry kept evolving around it.

The series’ development team addressed the issue of a waning interest in all things “Tomb Raider” when they decided to wipe their slate clean and start over again with a completely new “reboot” of their video game. It was a desperate move, but a bold one. And it paid off.

So without going into a verbose and elaborate sentence that sums up this game and how spectacular it is, let me just throw it out there now that Tomb Raider is a smash hit. Here’s why.

The top 10 are revealed on American Idol

It’s the Top 10 reveal on American Idol, folks.

I know … you’re dying to know what my score was based on my post from yesterday. If you read it and watched the reveal, you know I hit 70% overall. And … I did better with the girls than I did with the guys. (Wait … that didn’t come out right on any level … did it?)

The season 12 American Idol Top 10 are as follows: Paul Jolley, Burnell Taylor, Curtis Finch, Jr.*, Devin Velez*, Lazaro Arbos*, Janelle Arthur, Candice Glover*, Angie Miller*, Amber Holbcomb* and Kree Harrison*. (Asterisks denote my picks.)

Of those who got through, I’m going to opinionate on the three I didn’t choose to advance — Paul, Burnell and Janelle.

Burnell first: I wasn’t thrilled with Burnell’s performance a few days ago, but I saw enough to be convinced he could very well grab a top spot. And he did. So, there’s that.

Oz, the Great and Powerful almost lives up to its title

How do you make a prequel to a movie that is regarded as a classic, and also happens to be 74 years old? Disney and director Sam Raimi have placed themselves under some pretty tough scrutiny with their audacious decision to return to the land of Oz with Oz, the Great and Powerful, said prequel to 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, and also based on the works of Oz author L. Frank Baum. And this isn’t Disney’s first time visiting Oz … anyone remember the cult classic Return to Oz, a sequel which saw Dorothy institutionalized and undergoing shock therapy?! Thankfully, this new Oz movie is not quite that dark.

American Idol: Let the voting results roll in

This is where the fun begins on American Idol.

We’ve got our first live shows squarely tucked away and now it’s time for the voting public to have their say on who stays and who goes.  The 10 remaining gals and the 10 remaining guys get whittled down to a mere 5 each to form the Top 10 on the show. And I’m not saying anything everyone doesn’t already know by stating we’re ready for it.

The previous couple weeks in Vegas saw the judges hacking and chopping at the hopefuls, halving those who came across the stage to get to the 20 we currently have. In the interim I’ve been making merry by making edjumacated guesses as to who makes the cuts. And I don’t mind boasting my guesses landed in the upper ninety percentile range. (Yes … there were a few surprises thrown in for good measure. You’re just going to have to believe me.) It hasn’t been too difficult figuring who Randy and Company would give nods to and who they would nix. But now, with “Jane & Joe TV Viewer” having the power of elimination, the frolickry really starts.

Stefanie Powers is profane, vulgar and hilarious in Looped

Unless you’re a person of, ahem, a certain age, or are a classic film buff or Broadway baby, you probably have no clue who Tallulah Bankhead is. Ms. Bankhead became a star on stage in New York and England in the early part of the Twentieth Century, and transitioned to the silver screen where she won positive reviews, especially for her star turn in Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat, but her reputation off screen — her drug use, boozing and loose morals — became more of a legend that did her talent.

Towards the end of her life, and certainly past the expiration date of her career, Bankhead was contracted by the legendary Hammer Films to star in a psychological thriller called Fanatic (1965, US title: Die! Die! My Darling!), to do for Hammer what Bette Davis and Joan Crawford did for Warner Brothers three years earlier with What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? During production, there was a mishap while shooting a scene between Bankhead and co-star Stefanie Powers that resulted in a single line of dialogue being inaudible. To complete the film, Bankhead had to go to a studio and re-record, or “loop,” that line. If legend is to be believed, the session took eight hours due to Bankhead’s erratic behavior and that legendary session has been transformed into a stage play entitled Looped.
