Okay, I’ll admit I’m coming into this one with a bit of bias. You see, I’ve been a Bonnie Hunt fan for a long, long time now. I’ve enjoyed her guest appearances on talk shows, The Late Show with David Letterman in particular. I even liked her sitcoms some years back. There’s just something about her personality and quick wit which draw me in and hold me captive. Because the show is fairly new, because it’s daytime, because it’s syndicated on various stations at various times … it certainly rates being a show “off the beaten path.”
Since the show made its debut, I’ve found another aspect of Bonnie that makes things even more fun for me. She’s a reality television show fan! She’s even worse than I am, watching some shows I’d never watch or a few I’ve never even known exist. She’s been bringing on the eliminated teams from The Amazing Race each week. She had the Big Brother 10 winner, Dan, on the show. Today she’s going to have Phil Keoghan, the host of The Amazing Race, on the show.
Oh, she has an array of “normal” guests on, too. You know — actors, actresses, singers, bands. Her interview style and the interaction with the guests isn’t something you see on Leno. I don’t know, but they all come across more relaxed and maybe even a bit more human.
Not all of her guests are human, though. She gets the animals and the bugs. And then she gets whatever this red-furred creature might be:
Some of my favorite bits of the show don’t even really have typical guests at all. I find the segments she does with kids delightful. Her mother is a hoot! Bonnie also interacts with show producer Don Lake (a longtime partner of hers), quips with the band, and is trying to find another longtime partner/writer (Holly Wortell) a date online. Perhaps owing to Bonnie’s start in improvisational comedy, the show itself comes off as impromptu in its own way. That’s a good thing in my book.
Check your local listings to see when it’s airing in your area. You might even find yourself chuckling!
THANK YOU! Thanks so much for posting about this wonderful show and the wonderful woman who hosts it. I actually DVR a daytime talk show to watch in the evenings. Even Ellen couldn’t cause me to do that.
I hae always believed that Bonnie and I could be best friends (sounds frighteningly stalkerish, but it’s true!) and watching her now just firms that up. Her style is so natural. She makes everyone seem so comfortable. Her interview with David Boreanaz was amazing, equally so for Rob Estes and even Billy Baldwin! She has a way of making sure we all know that everyone is just like us, even if they are celebrities. The only interview I have seen yet that seemed a tad uncomfortable was with Diedre Hall. I decided she’s just not normal. ;-)
I love that she is not afraid to say things that others won’t. I don’t even watch the Hills, but I enjoy hearing her tell the girls on that show to have some respect and not let men treat them poorly.
Her animal scenes are so cute…when she was holding the baby kangaroo I thought she was going to burst into tears. She never hides what she is feeling, and is not afraid to get on her back on the floor and let 10 puppies climb all over and lick her face.
Finally, we are similar in age (she said she graduated as I did in 1983 but is three years older than me, so I cannot figure that out) and I find her stories about the past so entertaining. And almost every interview she has wants to share similar stories with her, and it is what makes everyone seem so human and down to earth.
Dookie Marcucci. And she found him and talked to him on the air. I have such a friend crush on her its unreal.
So, again, thank you for writing about this little show that needs more attention. For anyone who is looking for a breath of fresh daytime air, please tune in!!!
I love Bonnie Hunt! I DVR the show every day, and even if she doesn’t have a guest I’m interested in, I’ll still watch the opening segment. I’m glad she’s dressing better lately! She was a bit too casual at first. I’ve watched all of Bonnie’s sitcoms so I wish her the best in the daytime talk arena. Any word on the ratings so far? Thanks for helping draw attention to this talented woman!
