I’ve been hearing people rave about Moonlight since it premiered on CBS in the 2007-2008 season. I should know by now that whenever there’s a major cult following for a show, you’ve gotta believe it’s something special. But you never really know until you watch it for yourself.
Now I know. Moonlight is special. And for one major reason: Alex O’Loughlin as Mick St. John, an adorable vampire who can melt your heart with his eyes. When he looks at Beth, played by Sophia Myles, oh my gosh. I wish I was on the receiving end of those soulful looks. Let’s just say that any butter within close proximity is melting into a puddle. I’m just part-way into the series, and I know the show’s sad story about being cut woefully short. But I’ll enjoy the Mick ride while it lasts. Watch full episodes of Moonlight here.
Other stuff that made me clack this week:
- Oh, how I’ve missed Walter Bishop and the Fringe crew, and I’m so glad they’re back on my Tuesday night schedule. I was never a devoted follower of The X-Files or Alias, so any similarities don’t bother me. I love Walter’s eccentricities and awkward matchmaking skills as he tries to hook up Peter and Olivia. And the three of them really seem to work as a team against the outside forces. No one else on the show is clearly on the side of right, but these three sure seem to be — even with Peter’s shady background and Walter’s questionable lab experiments from way back when. The jury’s still out on Agent Broyles and Charlie, however. Are you as enamored with Fringe as I am?
- I finally watched this week’s mid-season premiere of Lost. I kind of wish they would all get in the same time zone. Here’s the thing with time-shifts: if you miss the two seconds where they show what time you’re in, you’re sort of … lost. Damages does a better job with it, because the time-shifts are actually a different color, sort of sepia-toned. Even if you miss that two seconds, you know right away you’re in a different time. And I wonder if the creators of Lost realized when they came up with the title that it would be a metaphor for how the viewers would feel at this point. I think they’re gradually trying to give us some answers, though. How do you feel about Lost right now?
- Grey’s Anatomy really hit it out of the park this week. I said in my review that it was the best episode of the series. I’m trying to decide why, and it’s because not only were the stories funny and heart wrenching — ranging from Sloan’s broken penis to the coming together of Meredith and Cristina — but the revelation of Denny’s words hit me like a ton of bricks. The writers somehow managed to string me along for all these episodes without knowing exactly what was happening. Sure, we had the feeling that Izzie might be sick, but I never got the enormity of Denny’s words, “I’m here for you, Izzie Stevens,” until this episode. Though it’s still unclear whether he’s a hallucination or a ghost. I’m sticking with ghost. Thoughts on that?

– It feels kind of meh. You really know that Ben Linus isn’t bad at the moment and that Sayid gave Hurley the wrong advice and that it will take another five or six episodes until that gets resolved. Also I’m kind of bummed that I got two episodes at once when the whole season is only 16 episodes long. And I don’t like evil Sun, especially because it’s so clear that Jin isn’t dead for her to flip/flop back to “good” once she finds out. So the grave is empty I guess. The timezone changes aren’t obvious but at the moment I don’t really care. What I’m kind of pissed about is that the Lost Podcast popped up two days before the premiere. In past years, they did some really cool stuff during the hiatus, this time – just Comic Con and that was it. To me that just shows that they have burnout syndrome and now come in a region where they can’t hide behind stuff anymore, it’s all coming to a close and they feel that the resolutions will be kind of lame. I remember when I tore into “Flashes Before your Eyes” for not being as good as “Donny Darko” while ripping it off from front to back, and because it should’ve been a two hour episode – it left too many plot holes. Compared to now THAT episode feels cool. They had to run two episodes for the viewers not to feel let down or too confused to drop it again right away. At least they didn’t make obvious references to the numbers this time. I’m anticipating new episodes of HIMYM more than of Lost and that speaks volumes. I mean “The Closer” returns this week and I couldn’t care less about “Lost”, it’s just not sizzling at the moment. It needs to sizzle again like halfway through last season. I will (of course) stick with it because I expect Carlton and Damon to deliver but still… make it sizzle already!

Awww…Moonlight. I loved that show. My heart ached for it when turning on BSG this past Friday, I saw the last minute of the show. Mick and Beth were hugging. It is such a shame it got cancelled. The story would have been great with Mick and Beth and Coraline’s family. Oh well. I am hopeful that Alex’s next show will be even better.
I watch Fringe, but it doesn’t have a huge hold over me. It is ok.
Lost…I kinda just want it to get over. Tell me the secrets and what is going on so I can move on from it. Though, these 2 episodes made some progress.
GA- Excellent episode. One of, if not, the best. I hope the rest of the season stays this good.
I may have to give in and watch Moonlight again.
I just may tune into Moonlight again myself. Some of the episodes with Coraline were gripping, and Mick is something special….
I never saw the first episode of Moonlight…and was depressed when I tuned into BSG only to realize I had missed it again! So very unfair. The last episode of that series was so incredible…left room for such great things. But NOOOOOO. Jerks.
I’m only so-so with Fringe. Love Joshua Jackson, and watching Fringe HAS made me start rewatching Dawson’s Creek, but I dislike the actress who plays Olivia Dunham so much that it is greatly hindering my enjoyment of what could otherwise be a favorite.
Lost is … ok. I think they are so deep in their own crap half the time that it takes away from the enjoyment of characterization and the realization that this all happened after a plane crash. There are so many aspects that I think could have been explored, and I’m not 100% on board with where they have gone. But Sawyer keeps me viewing, even with newly formed love handles. :-)
I liked Greys. I’m glad Eric Stoltz is gone, and was happy that Mer went to the execution, as well as Derek being outside to greet her. I’m torn over Cristina/McKidd; I don’t see where attraction has been born, let alone acted upon. The broken penis story has been done before, but I can’t remember where. I am an Izzie fan, and a Denny fan, and that he is here for her makes total sense. I like where it has gone, and will enjoy the rest of the ride. I am looking forward to what all of this will mean with regard to Alex, who has quickly become a favorite.
All in all, not a bad week of television!
I’m glad, but then not so, that Eric Stoltz is gone. He is a truly amazing actor and he really brought a lot to GA. But, damn, he was creepy! ;-)
