What is the best show on television?

debateEveryone has an opinion on most subjects. Lord knows I’ve got plenty, which is why I write. Politics and religion will always be lightning rods for debate, but some of the most knockdown, blood-boiling arguments I have witnessed in my 30+ years have been about two things: Movies and television. More specifically, the best movies and best TV shows.

After reading Debbie’s post on Friday positing the merits of How I Met Your Mother, I got to thinking. What is the best show on television right now? To get the ball rolling, I’ll give you my numero uno and briefly explain why I believe it to be the finest offering on the small screen. And the winner is …

How was that for suspense?

Lost (For more go here and here)

This is easy for me. Not only has it been my favorite series for five seasons, it also has the added bonus of being an expertly-crafted serialized narrative. A talented ensemble cast, ingenious writing, wonderfully intricate character arcs, heightened drama on a weekly basis, and the opportunity to use the thing between my ears to ask myself repeatedly, “What the hell did I just see?” and “Am I smart enough to figure it out?” The answers to those two questions are normally, “I have no idea” and “I’m too dumb.”

I love television (and film) that challenges me and keeps me guessing throughout. Just when I think I’ve solved the frustrating puzzle that is Lost, the producers and writers dump a whole new set of pieces in my lap. I like that, but that’s me. What about all of you out there in TV Land?

Tell me what you believe is the best show on television, and why? Don’t be shy. I know you have an opinion.

my favorite show is heroes, some people might say season 2 was bad, but for it being cut and only having about 3 weeks to write an ending i thought it was awesome. This season was awesome for the most part but some of the thing were not needed like the eclipse and hiro losing his power. but it comes back in two weeks and im really excited.

Wow, you are the first person I have heard say a good thing about Heroes in a long time. The first season was great, but I think it’s been just plain bad since then.

House. By far.

Every time I watch House during the commercial breaks I keep thinking how much of this episode has already passed and that it won’t be long before it’s over again.

My two fav shows of all time ended this yr (the wire and the shield), so of whats left id say its between Mad Men and In Treatment. Fun wise tho id say Chuck 100%.

i’m with you, the wire and the shield will always be at the top of my list. as far as shows still in production, i’m going with:

The Closer
Burn Notice
Sons of Anarchy (i know it’s only been one season, but it was a great one season)
Damages

Right now, I’m going to have to go with Supernatural. I know and love the Winchesters and their family, the brothers are hot, sexy, caring, compassionate, mysterious and funny. Can’t beat all of that in two brothers. The writing is top notch, they blend in the best pop culture references of any other shows I currently watch and every week leaves me wondering what will happen the next.

That’s MY personal best, but I think the idea is so subjective that saying THE best would be an impossibility.

While I agree Lost is great I don’t think it has been great for all it’s run. I would like to throw The Office, 30 Rock, Big Love and Damages into that argument. Mad Men and Sons of Anarchy aren’t too shabby either, it’s just too early in their run to make that claim.

Right now??

I think Mod’s got a good point, and there’s a distinction between what we like and what we recognize as “good.” Its why, as an example, Varsity Blues is one of my all time favorite movies. I like it more than Shawshank Redemption, but I realize one is a considerably better movie than the other.

That being said, of the shows that I watch, I would say that BSG is the best show on. (Highly regarded shows I don’t watch: Mad Men, House, the Office, Big Love).

Oh, and I love Heroes.

Battlestar Galactica…while it lasts!

January 25, 2009 at 9:37 PM

I can’t be objective either. Battlestar Galactica would be the best for me personally but, I would never say that my best show is better than someone else’s best show. To each their own.

Right now, I would have to say one of these 3:

BSG
The Closer
T:SCC

The last few episodes of T:SCC have been some of the best television I’ve seen in a while.

I agree, The Sarah Connor Chronicles are wonderful. I hope they do well on Friday’s.

January 26, 2009 at 12:22 PM

Oh, I forgot to mention Friday Night Lights. Its got to be up there.
