The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is intoxicating musical heroin

Last week, I compared Mma Ramotswe to Mary Richards, and I’m still standing by that statement. The “traditionally built” woman is sort of a seat-of-her-pants kinda gal, one who sees the little details and reads people, but gets freaked out by snakes in her engine on a dusty road, as she did in this week’s episode.

A lot of times, she doesn’t really know where she’s headed with a case, but she plunges forward anyway and she’s not afraid to do “something,” even if she’s not sure how it will pay off in the end. I like that in my crime fighters.

She’s reading “Principles of Private Investigation,” but she doesn’t really need it. She already knows everything she needs to know about solving cases. It’s mostly a matter of paying attention to what’s going on around you.

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency continues to grow on me, because it’s something different from most of the re-hashed shows on mainstream channels. For one thing, it’s filmed on location in the starkly beautiful Batswana, and all the little touches really make the show, like Mma’s rundown white Datsun with the “D” missing off the tailgate.

The music is also very cool, like intoxicating musical heroin or something. I did a quick search but didn’t come up with anything definitive. If anyone comes up with a list of music played on the show, post it here!

Alright Jane, I give in. Your glowing reviews have caught me. In the next two weeks I hope to hunt down past episodes and to see how intoxicating the rock candy you’re selling truly is ;)
