That’s right; Greek has officially taken the leap from leader to follower, from shepherd to sheep, from master to … well, you get the point. And for all of you who loved the girl-girl kiss, for everyone who was simply waiting for more, I beg of you to take a moment and think: what does this add to the show? Does this really enhance a character’s growth, or add to the myriad of storylines that are already so plentiful that the cast rotates from week to week?
Definitely not for me, and I think it was a waste of time, and a total waste of an opportunity for more (or even some) Dale. I know that I’m a broken record, but what’s up with no Clark Duke every other week? That we can predict when to expect him to appear is a sad commentary on how Greek utilizes one of its strongest players. For that reason, I’m going to go the childish route (for those of you who read my Celebrity Apprentice pieces, this comes as no surprise to you), and re-brand people at will. Take that, Patrick Sean Smith (Greek‘s creator)!
First to the aforementioned lesbian love, so that those of you who are only interested in this one subject can move on: apparently Not-Dale-Rebecca has been bitten by the same-sex bug. As soon as the final dare at Not-Dale-Kiki’s bachelorette party was to kiss a girl, I saw this coming. The sad thing is that, obviously, the show felt that this would give Not-Dale-Rebecca something juicy to do. Putting aside whether or not you enjoyed the fleeting moment (in my opinion, those two are not the right choices for this dalliance), it does nothing for the show besides putting a check in the requisite “lesbian” box. Greek is better than that.
I don’t really understand much of the sorority world, but I found it funny that “Big Sis” carries on through the generations; Not-Dale-Kiki was Not-Dale-Frannie’s Big Sis, who in turn was Not-Dale-Casey’s Big Sis, who in turn is Not-Dale-Rebecca and Not-Dale-Jordan’s Big Sis, making Not-Dale-Kiki Not-Dale’s Jordan and Rebecca’s Great-Gran Big Sis, or in this case, “Baubie!” Now that was some classic Greek.
But little else lived up to that high. Beaver (he’s always welcome) got the new KT pledges lost on their way back to the KT house; Not-Dale-Ashleigh (she’s not) showed up in a Care Bear inspired shirt, complete with cloud and rainbow shoulders. Rusty called him and Not-Dale-Jordan “The Bonnie and Clyde of botany.” Okay, all good, but those are little more than one-liners in a sea of boring, like watching the commercials and fast forwarding the show. Somehow, Greek has lost the ability to juggle all of its characters, and is now being forced to play a game at which it’s losing. For those of you who’re new to the show, Greek is still better than most anything else on TV; it’s just been even better in the past. Imagine that!
A number of the current stories of the week are a little too weak for me: Not-Dale-Max (now why couldn’t he disappear?) decided to come clean to Not-Dale-Casey about passing on Cal Tech, before attempting to lavaliere her; is that even something a non-Greek can (or would want to) do? Not-Dale-Jordan suddenly wants to fit in, both at ZBZ and with Rusty, who can seriously do better. And where was Andy? Is he going to be the latest member of this show to go MIA every other week?
Cappie got in a classic line about Edward III, but otherwise his plots have seen better days. Talk about underutilization! And besides Dale and Andy, we were missing Calvin and Evan as well, in addition to the weak showing by Cappie. If the show’s audience strength is male, we want the guys. If it’s female? I’m guessing that they want the guys too. So, what gives?
Now, I’m not advocating an all-male cast, but rather, like Oreo said last week, there needs to be a refocus on the main characters, as well as an overhaul of the female characters. And not just because it’s tough remembering to type “Not-Dale” in front of so many names; Greek burst out of the gate two years ago, and ever since has been great entertainment. Call this a second (third? fourth?) season slump, or whatever, but this show needs, and deserves, to get back to its foundations. Sure, everyone on the show should experience some growth, but there’s a difference between growth and spinning them into a soap opera for teens….
Greek was never just for the youngins, and I sincerely hope they’re not planning on changing that anytime soon. Go Dale!
Yay I was linked too! haha
I was waiting for this as I really need to vent…
WORST EPISODE EVER!
Deal god did that episode suck! Once again no Dale and no Calvin! We already have a gay guy on the show, and he’s a great character, so now we need to just the shark and make Rebbecca a lesbian? hell it would have made more sense just to make Jordan bisexual or something. Shit… I don’t want to give the “writers” any ideas. I live nearish to Smith College which seems to be only famous for lesbians, and I know about “LUGs” (Lesbians Until Graduation), but this isn’t what I had in mind when I said that the females needed to be redone!
I didn’t miss Evan at all, he is a loser and reminds me of high school, people who bitch when their parents wouldn’t by rims for their $40,000 SVU, that their parents bought them.
If this episode was meant to get guys to watch for the lesbian kiss it failed, it was lame and stupid. Plus I feel that more girls watch the show, so shouldn’t their be more guys? Calvin should go to a gay strip club, that might get more girls attention.
This could be the downfall of the show. I have no clue what the ratings are, but with episodes like this I wouldn’t blame people for ditching. This episode felt like I was watching a 11th season of a show, which is pretty much just a spinoff of a few characters, but they kept the name. It felt like the last few seasons of Stargate SG-1.
They added Jordan and Andy, they could be great characters, but Andy is a jock stereotype, and they don’t know what to do with Jordan, she is all over the place. However she is cute which brings up last week’s episode, she didn’t need a makeover last week! She is the cutest girl on the show by a mile.
The show is a shell of it’s former self which it just turns to lame stereotypes to tell really horrible stories. hell did last night’s episode even have a real plot besides lesbians at a wedding? Who get’s married at a college anyways? They better turn this around quick, or they are done.
Every post you normally put has links to each characters IMDb profile & I HATE THAT! This time i was counting on it though because I really want to know who played the lesbian older sorority chick cuz she was hott! Good job getting rid of the links (though you can keep them for guest stars).
I know you don’t like when Dale’s not in there but he can’t be in there all the time, unless they start showing Rusty in class or at home more. He’s an active now, so of course he’s going to be at the KT house more than at home (which is probably just for sleep & some studying).
I agree – I’m not fond of the Max story at all. Or Evan’s/Frannie & Ashleigh. I am greatly intrigued by Rebecca playing with her sexuality. As the chick said (forgot her characters name), it’s something a lot of college students go through (or high school).
yay, found what i wanted. The chicks name is Robin & is played by Anna Osceola.

So, first less and now more? Make up your mind! :)
I don’t really see why Dale couldn’t be on the show regularly; Rusty lives out of the KT house, just like last year. And, if anything, he has less demands on his time now that he’s no longer a pledge. I think either a) there are budget issues, or b) they are seriously working on a rotating storyline schedule. But to say it makes sense is crazy! Dale’s a main character!
Whether or not there is truth to Rebecca’s storyline, it just felt too “making sure all the pieces are there.” There was absolutely no fluidity to the angle, until they threw in the idea of her looking for a boyfriend during the episode. I felt like it was just a lazy grab for viewers.
Sorry about leaving out Robin … I thought of her as just a vehicle for Rebecca, so didn’t even think of mentioning her. Next time!
