What you get in Burn Notice season two DVDs

Burn Notice‘s third season is a few episodes in already, and the second season of the series was released on DVD last week (we had a giveaway for a few sets of them and have already contacted the winners — sorry if it wasn’t you!) I’m really familiar with the series, having caught it since episode one back in July of 2007. So, what I was looking for in the DVD set was what special features are included, and that’s what I’ll quickly get into here.

First of all, let me just say that I found it really odd that, at the start of each disc, there’s an advertisement for buying the season two DVDs. The copy I’m reviewing is one of the commercially available ones, not a special review copy, so why this ad is on a DVD, never mind every one of them, is really odd. We bought the DVD — no need to sell it to us!

Among the special features included on the DVDs are deleted scenes, some episodes with commentary tracks, a “NIXin’ It Up On Burn Notice” featurette, and a gag reel. In most or all of the cases, the deleted scenes add nothing to the episode from whence they were cut. Some of the scenes are so incredibly brief that I’m not really sure why they bothered to add them at all, other than to give the buyer more of a feeling that they got something extra. They even number each scene, as though we have some idea of where in the episode they belong. A better idea would have been to simply add the deleted scenes into an “extended” version of the episode and label them there, so we know which scenes are new.

The episodes with deleted scenes: “Breaking and Entering,” “Trust Me,” “Comrades,” “Double Booked,” “Do No Harm,” “Truth and Reconciliation,” and “Lesser Evil.”

There are also a few episodes with commentary, some with cast members, some with the director or other people involved with the show. These include: “Bad Blood,” “Double Booked,” and “Lesser Evil.”

The “NIXin’ It Up On Burn Notice” video is a decently long special feature, featuring Creator/Writer/Director Matt Nix, talking about the “Do No Harm” episode. You really get a sense of his understandable love for the show and the process that goes into every aspect of it. It was definitely a great episode to pick for this feature, and I’m sure other fans will like to see it.

Lastly, there’s a ten-minute gag reel on the last DVD, which is always one of my favorite parts of the special features on a DVD set, especially one that already has some comedic aspects about it. There’s something featuring all of the major cast members EXCEPT Sharon Gless! She doesn’t make an appearance in it at all, which was a huge bummer.

You can pick up Burn Notice Season Two on DVD or Blue-ray in stores today. If you think you’ll dig what I had to spill about it, go get it!
