The Middle – Did Mr. Ehlert charge his granddaughter for a soda?

In all honesty, the thought hadn’t crossed my mind. But, had I ever stopped to consider what animal would make the most sense for Brick to mother on The Middle, I’m willing to bet I wouldn’t have come up with an un-hatched, then newly hatched, chick. I would have lost that bet … but man was it awesome.

I thought at first that Scout had become part of someone’s breakfast when he went missing. I’m not much for all that science and book learning, but it would make sense to me that eggs that don’t make it to be chicks end up on our plates. Or at least potentially could, even if nine times out of ten it takes some synthetic process to make it so. But like I said, I’m not one for the science.

But the decision to have the egg hatch, leaving Brick to care for a baby chick, was a stroke of genius. I don’t want to discourage any of you out there who are romanticizing becoming a parent, but Brick’s struggles with Scout were spot-on in terms of things that parents deal with regarding their human children. The impatience (on the baby’s part only, of course). The need for attention. The return home and immediate immersion into things without a moment’s rest. The knock on the door of the bathroom. None of these things ever happened to me with my son, but I hear tell that they’re very common. My boy’s special, is all.

Morgan (Alexa Vega) returned to Axl’s life last night. I could have sworn that it was a different actress, but apparently not. That “I told Axl” line was annoying, but Frankie has got to chill. It was hard to tell if she was getting defensive about her parenting skills, or jealous that someone was replacing her in Axl’s life. Either way, leaping over the dinner table might have been a bit much. And by the way, where’d the extra dinner chair come from? Brick was still sitting in his lawn chair, but everyone else, Morgan included, was in a regular-sized chair. What gives?

But, be honest — as it was happening, how many of you thought that attacking Morgan like that might possibly not have been all in Frankie’s head, even as you knew that it was? Frankie’s definitely capable of such a thing … a point proven when she hit Morgan in the head with a ball at the picnic. Sorry, but there I approve!

Sue was annoying last night, but in the manageable way that she was in the beginning of the season. Great line about using the same lip gloss as Brad, but who wants to see her fawning over Morgan after (and before) she got injured?

The nicest moment for me came when Frankie’s “It all starts with the broccoli” mentality rubbed off on Mike, after Axl said he might not play football the following year. I thought we’d hear Mike lamenting his stud athlete no longer being a star, but his concern was for Axl’s future. Sure he ended things with Axl living in their basement, but for Mike, football is Axl’s ticket to college. It was nice to see that he’s that kind of guy.
