Bones – The merriment in the experiment

'Bones' knocks out a solid episode this week full of fun, Bill Nye nostalgia, and helping everyone remember why science is cool.

- Season 6, Episode 4 - "The Bod in the Bounty"

Considering what I do, it’s supremely ironic that until I was a sophomore in high school, I didn’t watch television. I was raised entirely on PBS and Saturday morning cartoons. Which made me a massive nerd. And, like I’m sure every massive nerd who watched this week’s episode of Bones, I was immediately brought back to all those hours upon hours of watching Bill Nye the Science Guy with the addition of The Science Dude (David Alan Grier). Now, I hate science, but for an hour or so I’d be absolutely transfixed, and watching this episode of Bones was a sweet way to bring up all that nostalgia and wonder I used to feel.

The episode itself was a nice nostalgic nod to simpler times, bringing us back to a place where the tension between Booth and Brennan is so strained and palpable it’s almost physically uncomfortable. We’re back to Cam being sassy and in charge, Hodgins gleefully causing mayhem, Booth and Brennan being supportive in a sweet, subtle way, Brennan kicking ass and taking names, Caroline being Caroline (I continue to posit that all episodes with Caroline are automatically superior), Sweets being harried, and Angela being the best BFF ever. And it feels good. It wasn’t a life-changing, earth-shattering episode, but it was nice. I don’t need my world to be rocked every week. This is just right.

I agree on Caroline, she amps up and raises up any episode she’s in or around.

This episode bothered me, it was so clearly stunt casting and annoying – if this is the best Bones can do then perhaps that cancellation light at the end of the tunnel is becoming brighter.

It just seemed forced, like all cast were told you MUST do this, you MUST have fun and you MUST think that David is funny. Bones with a kids show? Are we arcing back to the jonesing for a kid? Jealousy for Angela? Lust for Booth?

Writers put on the big boy pants and give us some adult fare, not silly nonsensical screaming children. Not the ones in the audience in the lab.

what was with the line about Bones’ car mileage … ? overt product placement?

The product placement is getting worse in Bones, I didn’t really notice it until last season with the Avatar episode and Angela explaining how good her Toyota is.

I liked this episode. I particularly liked Bones referring to him as “Dude” all the time, like that was his name. And her finally deciding to the show and her appearance and commitment to the kids show was fun to see.

The one part that caught me was when Angela said that if she were having a girl she name her Temperance. Then she said they wouldn’t call her that because it would be awful. I know that they don’t often use first names, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the name Temperance nor did I think that Angela would say that to her. But maybe I’m reading that part wrong.
