Top Chef – Here, fishy fishy fishy!

Another double elimination puts the already snippy contestants on edge. In one of the only (and maybe the first) non-finale episodes without a quickfire, the chefs get sent out to sea to catch their protein.

- Season 8, Episode 6 - "We're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat"

This episode starts off with the moment that made me laugh my ass off during the preview from last week. Namely, Marcel acting like a faux-urban douchebag. If you missed it, it was eerily similar to the Abe Lincoln skit on Whitest Kids U’ Know. By the way, chugging gin straight from the bottle was a nice touch, Marcel. He was fixating all of his douchebaggery on Dale T., who took it all in stride. You know, I didn’t like Dale very much during his original season because he was a loose cannon, but the guy has obviously matured a lot in the last few years.

Fishing was another smart idea from the producers (although The Next Iron Chef did it months ago, but I digress). Anyone who’s ever gone fishing on open waters know how fun, but exhausting it can be. I’m pretty impressed that the chefs saw this challenge as an adventure instead of a chore.

Dale made a delicious-looking fish taco, but Carla ultimately won with her smoked blue fish and won a trip to Amsterdam. Again, Marcel makes himself look like that much of a jerk by squashing Carla’s celebration as she comes back to the waiting room. Marcel and his umpteenth foam was on the bottom along with his team members and Jamie, Antonia and Tiffany F. Tiffany and Jamie ultimately went home because both dishes were bland — in fact, Antonia made one of the best dishes and was only on the bottom because she was on their team.

Last week, I defended Jamie a little, but I admit that for the majority of the season (save a couple quickfires) she’s done a whole bunch of nothing. I was disappointed that Tiffany left because she had some really strong moments during the competition. That and I really wanted Marcel to go home already.

- Mike (because I don’t want to change the profile on Kate’s phone)

This season just feel’s weird. Chef’s that I used to think were strong wind up at elimination tabLes or are already out. If I had to pick a final four now, it’s Carla, Dale, Richard, and Angelo. There are a couple that I think could sneak in there, but I believe those are my front runners.

Just calm down, calm down. Play’s on stage.

And that final four is completeLy different than what I thought at the beginning of the season.

I loved the “bromance” between Richard and Fabio, though it was shortlived.
