I rather enjoy the BBC’s Being Human series. There’s something I like about the very short, to-the-point seasons; there’s just no time to beat around the bush and they can’t throw in a frustrating filler episode. It’s light and deep at the same time and it’s just a fun ride.
I’m not at all riveted to the new SyFy version of Being Human. It’s weird for me, to watch a remake of a series when the original hasn’t even finished telling its story yet. It seems … unnecessary. I feel no need to experience Being Human‘s Bizarro World, even though I have nothing against it and have caught most of it so far.
However, the BBC may be onto something with its newly-announced web series spinoff, Becoming Human, about a teenaged ghost, vampire and werewolf. Adam, the vampire, made an appearance in Being Human‘s third season and navigates high school with his new buds in the web series.
Everything about this move is a smart one:
See for yourself:
I might be in the minority, but I do like the remake (again, haven’t seen the original yet).
I’ver seen both and the British actors sell theirs so much better than the American actors. So far the SYFY version has copied the original one but is expected to break away in an ep or so but for me, I will cont watching the origial one and have stopped watching the copy. SYFY may one day again, do original series that are seriuos, maybe….Ok, O doubt it…
I’m enjoying the Syfy version and I have not seen the BBC version, so you have to take into account that not everyone who watches the Syfy version has BBC America – or that some people don’t even like British shows. I did, however, buy the first two BBC seasons on iTunes … I just need to find some time to watch them!
I have been watching the SyFy version and I like it. I have seen the UK version in full also but find I am enjoying the US version better. I love certain UK shows like Dr. Who, Torchwood (which may or may not be good produced by Showtime) and Primeval but there is something about the UK version that I find totally different than the US version of Being Human. I don’t know, maybe it is the casting…
Like them both, although the British cast feels more like real folks to me and so far the SyFy versions feels more like watching a sitcom. It’s still entertaining enough to be worth watching.
I’m not sure I could deal with a show about Adam the teen vampire. I didn’t like the character and for most of the episode I felt like they should just stake him and be done with it. But maybe I’ll check out the first episode and see.
The US version is more slick and might hit its stride yet but not if it copies the UK version like it is doing now. The UK version has a very real feel. The lack of production value and the actors sell it. Plus the how awkward the set up is works better for British humour than it does for the US. I believe if the US version completely steers itself away from the UK version like The Office or QAF, it may have a chance but it’s going to have to do that very soon or else die the way of Coupling.
SyFy version sucks. I don’t like the actors. BBC all the way. Come up with something SyFy.
