On this seventh leg of The Amazing Race, things took a nasty turn as the episode became more about the brewing conflicts amongst the teams than it was about the race itself. Art & JJ, Brendon & Rachel and Vanessa & Ralph have had some animosity since the start, but while Art & JJ seemed to just be instigators in the past to throw the others off their game, they were actual participants this week, and tried to drag Nary & Jamie into the mix by telling the other teams that the women definitely aren’t kindegarten teachers. But even when confronted directly, they denied being anything but.
It’s disappointing to see what used to be such a terrific show degenerate into Real Housewives type of sensationalism when the challenges should take center stage. But when you have challenges like jumping up and down for a minute, you need to focus on the sensational to draw attention away from the tedium (and seriously, when given a choice between throwing a weapon and hitting a moving target or jumping up and down for a minute, why would anyone in their right mind choose throwing a weapon?).
The other challenge on this leg consisted of teams building a tent with a working bush shower. Granted, this was a complicated project that required strength and communication (one thing lacking in most teams at this point, although Brendon and Rachel seemed to only have one minor tiff while the rest berated the skills of their partners), but it would have been tedious to watch had it not been for the conflict. In the end, the team that started the leg, Dave & Rachel, finished the leg in first place. Nary & Jamie fell way behind because they really lacked the strength necessary to build their campsite quickly, checked in at the Pit Stop last … only to be told it was a non-elimination leg.
Interestingly, as Art & JJ (third), Brendon & Rachel (fourth) and Ralph & Vanessa (fifth) all checked in, Phil even asked each team about the conflicts, seeming disappointed himself that the race has taken an ugly turn. Art & JJ and Brendon & Rachel said that they were going to focus on the race and let whatever happened go, but Ralph & Vanessa insisted that Brendon & Rachel are the ones causing problems and that they have no reason to even try to be friends with them. Even the African greeter seemed disappointed in Vanessa’s answer.
Highlights and quotes:
Art and JJ and Vanessa and Dave are such grade school bullies. Honestly Brendan and Rachel did nothing bad or overly annoying and they just got criticized by them left and right. I liked Art and JJ at the beginning of the race, but they quickly turned cocky, arrogant and annoying. I hope Vanessa and Dave are gone next week though, they really are disgusting people.

Vanessa and Ralph are the troublemakers (Rachel and Dave are the ones who came in first). I agree about Art & JJ. They seemed personable enough at the start, but we are now starting to see their true colors. Vanessa has picked on Rachel from the beginning for no reason except that she was on Big Brother, so anything that Brendon did to accelerate the conflict that happened this week was probably deserved because of how they’ve been treated. I can’t say I’m Brendon & Rachel’s biggest fan, but there comes a point when you have to take their side after being bullied by the other teams. At this point, I hope Brendon & Rachel, Mark & Bopper and Nary & Jamie make it to the final three because the other three teams have just become so obnoxious.
I think there’s gotta be more to Brenchel than it’s being shown. Perhaps the other teams have learn of Rachels constant meltdowns and that’s why the other teams are more against them or there is a problem backstage during the rests between the legs. Art and JJ I feel are decent guys just in your face kinda guys so people don’t like them as much (also how retarded are Nary and Jamie looking with their really lame coverup of the fact they are law enforcement!)
Bopper and Mark deserve to win the race and I really hope they do, they are the best team in a long time of Amazing Races. They just take everything in stride with good humor.
And this might be a woman thing, but if someone I don’t like very much threw in my face my age as an insult I’d probably have reacted exactly the same way Vanessa did! So I really didn’t see much of a deal about that as other people have, haha. Some people say she was just trying to show Vanessa she was acting like a kid, but then you would say, “what are you, 6??” So honestly, she was just trying to do a mean jab at her being older.
Lastly, I would’ve stopped to see the elephants too, the little baby elephant was the cutest thing ever.
Vanessa is just mean…maybe she wants Brandon that’s why she soo mean to rahcel
