Survivor – Everyone’s playing those mind games

Troy, Jeff and the producers played a round of mind games with Kat and the viewers on this week's 'Survivor.'

- Season 24, Episode 11 - "Never Say Die"

Troyzan plays mind games with Kat

Well, I thought last week was the week for Kat to make a big move, but this week was another chance for her to prove why she should still be on Survivor. About the only thing she did prove was that she’s totally delusional.

The episode wasted no time in getting into game mode … because they had all of that footage of the tribe chasing a wild pig they had to show us later. But we got right into the reward challenge and this was the game that really shows everyone where they stand within the tribe. Yes, it was the game of “Guess What Your Tribe Thinks of You,” and Christina was not feeling the love, because no matter what the question was, someone put her name down as an answer (not that the majority always went that way, but it was telling nonetheless). Troyzan’s name came up the most as the majority answer — no surprise — but Kat was feeling a little bummed as well (all the questions and majority answers are below). From the tree mail clue, the tribe figured that whoever won the challenge would get to pick someone to go with them, and Kim promised Kat she would go. Now, seriously, did anyone who’s been watching the show this season really believe Kim would choose Kat over Chelsea?  Anyone? Granted, she did pick Alicia first since she came in second (and because she didn’t trust leaving her back at camp with Troyzan), but when given a second choice, she went right for Chelsea. Ironic that this should happen after the majority of the tribe said that Kat was most in need of a wake-up call. But did she hear that alarm go off?

Troy took full advantage of Kat’s naïveté while the three girls were off enjoying some alone time, pointing out that Kim had her final three (but he didn’t know the reason why Kim chose Alicia … nor did Alicia, which will be very interesting to see when she does find out she wasn’t trustworthy enough to stay at camp), that it was time to make a big move and take Kim out … but Sabrina was there too and after he was done with Kat, Sabrina swooped in to remind her that Kim left the most trustworthy behind so Troyzan couldn’t screw up the vote by outwitting everyone. Kat’s on camera interviews were very interesting as she was obviously distressed by Troyzan’s mind games, worried that she would be seen as a hanger-on in the game and not making her own decisions when … she is actually the one running things! Yes! Kat outed herself as the master manipulator of the season! Really! She truly thinks that. If that’s the case, then the editors have really been screwing with us even more than we thought just by not showing us the conversations between the women and Tarzan. I think the hunger, the mind games, and the hurt from not getting to go on the reward really got to her at that moment. But if I’d had a mouthful of water when she said that, I would have done a spit take!

The immunity challenge told the same story, though, as two people were pitted against each other over the course of three rounds. When it was The Battle of the ‘Zans, everyone was rooting Tarzan on and went nuts when he beat Troyzan. For the rest of the challenge, Troyzan gazed out to sea while the game continued behind his back. Kim won immunity, went into Operation Damage Control with Kat, told her the vote would be for Troy but they had to give two votes to someone else in case he had an idol, and that someone was … Christina. Not the other guy still in the tribe, but Christina. Sabrina even told Christina she was the sacrificial lamb, and then Christina told Troyzan, who used that knowledge to his advantage by trying to convince two others to vote for her. Alas, it didn’t work (nor did Jeff’s not-so-subtle instigation, playing his own mind games with Kat), making Tarzan the last man standing (and it seemed like he voted with Troyzan this time, but Kim had already decided that he would vote for Christina along with Sabrina). But Troyzan held out hope that his mind games were still working on Kat, leaving her with a whispered, “Do it,” on his way out. But Jeff had the best final words as the biggest threat left the game: “Now what?”

Reward challenge questions and answers:

  • Who does not deserve to still be in the game? Christina
  • Who would you trust with your life? Kim
  • Who needs a wake-up call in life? Kat (everyone voted for Kat but Kat, who said Christina)
  • Who is the biggest poseur? Troyzan
  • Who does the least for the tribe? Sabrina (that one surprised me)
  • Who would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Kim
  • Who do you hope to never see again? Troyzan

And if you missed the vote tally:

  • Troy — Christina
  • Christina — Chelsea
  • Kim — Troy
  • Tarzan — Christina
  • Chelsea — Troy
  • Sabrina — Christina
  • Alicia — Troy
  • Kim — Troy
  • Kat — Troy

“He’s become the molecular substrate of this island, so he does belong on this island.” — Tarzan, as Troyzan’s reward challenge dummy burned
“I … was just getting ready to say that.” — Jeff

I think I figured out Tarzan’s game.

He needs new shocks. So he’s fine with the 10,000 bucks he gets for third place, playing the absolutely non-threat.

You could say that that is smart. You could also say it’s completely boring.

It does seem like Tarzan is being looked at as someone who ought to make it to the end by Kim. The last handful of episodes have been so dull, though. At least next week there’s a *bit* of intrigue, as we’re not sure whether it’s Cat, Christina, or Tarzan (or maybe the ultimate red herring of Sabrina).
