Saturday, I had a brief interview set with Eric Powell of the popular fan-favorite comic The Goon. (I ended up cancelling that interview as certain members of the CliqueClack team saw differently in that being licked on the cheek by a monkey was more important than breaking news. *snort*) Eric is currently in the midst of development for an animated film for same, something I expect to be covering for the Flicks division of our site when that project finally comes to light. The above is testament of how to bring a smile to one’s face with a simple piece of paper and a Sharpie.
Who knew Chris Daughtry — #4 contestant of season 5 of American Idol and popular musician of his titular band — was an artist in his own right? I didn’t. But I got introduced to that right-quick during a one-on-one interview with him when I showed up at the Michael J. Wolf Gallery in the Gaslamp Quarter with colleague Tara Shrodes. Chris contributed a pretty nifty Batman piece to the gallery he designed and penciled himself. (You can see the original piece in the top left corner of the above photo.) Add to that the additional value added thrill of him being good friends with artist Jim Lee (Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Image Comics and more) who did the inks for the piece. Nice defining moment for an Idol fan and comic geekdorknerd.
On a personal note, the streets of the Gaslamp Quarter are filled to bursting with attendees — both professional and otherwise — during the very late afternoon and evening hours of the day. There are conversations aplenty, costumed folk of varying degrees, there’s music and laughter in the air and gads of people are on a mission to get somewhere somehow or grab a much-needed bite to eat. Frequently, you will see recognizable faces amongst the crowds or eating in the restaurants and cafes. It was on the main drag I finally bumped into my cousin, Lauren, decked out wonderfully in a Scarlet Witch costume of her own making. Oh … there are more moments and situations. The dude shaving on the San Diego Trolley right in front of me. The exclusive launch of “The Ivey and Michael Comedy Hour” during the 36th annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive. Getting up close and personal with Sly Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. And so much more.
As Ivey West said in his post: “With so much going on, you can never do everything that you’d planned.” And that, folks, is absolutely correct.
But damn … it’s a helluva ride trying …
