True Blood – Glamouring: it’s just like starting over

With just two remaining episodes of ‘True Blood’ this season, Russell Edgington has finally played his hand, Hoyt asks Jessica to glamour him, Bill sounds like a religious nut, Sookie may be a vampire offering, and in an unlikely turn of events, Eric grovels at Russell’s feet. Otherwise, it’s just another ordinary day in Bon Temps.

- Season 5, Episode 10 - "Gone, Gone, Gone"

Last night’s episode of True Blood titled “Gone, Gone, Gone” reminded me a bit of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, an old favorite of mine starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. I say this because a dejected-looking Hoyt approached Jessica and Jason saying he was moving to Alaska to get a fresh start as an oil driller but he wanted to be glamoured before he left town. It seems he doesn’t want to remember his time with Jessica or his time being Jason’s best friend because the two caused him nothing but pain since they revealed their affair to him. I can’t say I blame the guy.

He appeared so truly heartbroken that a guilty Jessica felt obligated to grant his seemingly reasonable request, however painful it was for her and Jason to acquiesce. I’ve always found this an interesting concept ever since I saw it done in the above-mentioned film. If it were actually possible to erase certain memories of someone from your brain without tampering with other memories, would you do it? Think carefully. It would be just like starting over. Actually, given the way things have been unraveling this season, glamouring yourself from True Blood Season 5 memories might not be such a bad idea.

We’ve all got our mental and emotional baggage we’re carrying around that can sometimes get over-crowded with all of our former lovers, friends and enemies. If you could take the opportunity to take a part of this hurt away for good and get a fresh start, would you take it? I don’t know if I could to be honest with you, but I applaud Hoyt for making his choice. However, I wonder if this means Hoyt will be leaving the show.

I’m excited that Russell Edgington has finally decided to show his true hand. While his exact intentions remain unclear, it’s obvious he’s going to be calling the shots from now on because he bows down to no one. In an uncharacteristic Eric move, Eric was seen groveling at Russell’s feet, asking for his forgiveness and telling him that all of the bad blood between them was under the bridge. I don’t think Eric has really been converted into a devout Lilith believer quite yet, but it was a clever ploy to keep himself alive for the time being.

I don’t know if this week’s title referred more to Hoyt’s memories being erased or Bill’s mind being “gone, gone, gone.” Bill is starting to worry me because he sounds like a religious nut spouting scriptures from his vampire bible. Does he really believe he’s ushering his kind into the dawn of a coming age or is he faking? Maybe Jessica can save him now that he’s finally summoned her. At any rate, I hope someone saves this show soon because this season has not been a very exciting one.

Random Thoughts:

  • Sookie certainly found a new use for chopsticks, as she staked the coroner who had turned into a ravenous vampire. If I were her, I’d be seriously annoyed with having to clean up so many blood-and-guts messes from my home. She needs to start doing her killing away from the house.
  • I’m really over the Lilith storyline and I’m tired of seeing her blood-soaked naked body appearing to them in visions. Once was creepy, but now it’s just repetitive.
  • Loved the scene with Russell Edgington and Steve Newlin slow-dancing to Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” after killing an entire room of humans.
  • Why’d they have to kill off Molly?
  • Did Jason really look up that stuffed animal’s dress?
  • It’s good to know the National Vampire League or Vampire Authority or whatever they call themselves now shops at IKEA, as my friend and her mom pointed out an IKEA bowl sitting on their table in one of the scenes.
  • If the first fae-bearing heir of the Stackhouse family was promised to Warlow, why is it taking him this long to collect? Why are they throwing an unbelievable Rumpelstiltskin element to this season?

Memorable Quotes:
“Thanks for the suggestion, but we prefer to do things the old-fashioned way.” – Pam
“Yeah, you and Blockbuster Video.” – Elijah

“My blood is in you – I will never leave you. … Lilith is a godless god.” – Godric (to Eric & Nora)

“Who’s the smart one now?” – Jason (to Sookie after discovering Gran’s hidden cubby hole beneath the floorboards under her bed)

“I don’t say this to many men but I love you.” – Andy (to Lafayette who prepared a special after-hours dinner for him and Danielle in Merlotte’s)

“I don’t know nothin’ ‘bout birthin’ no baby vampires.” – Tara

“We’re not running. No one fucks with us in our house.” – Tara (after killing Elijah)

“Look, Emma. There’s your daddy on TV. Isn’t he handsome? I think he’s dashing.” – Russell Edgington (talking about Steve Newlin)

“I will have the sun!” – Russell Edgington

The scene with Hoyt,Jessica and Jason was just heartbreaking. I wonder if that’s the last we see of him.
Jason looking under the Teddy bear’s dress was hilarious! I don’t think Ryan gets his due because Jason is such a dumbass that it’s easy to think that’s not hard to play..but it’s the little things like that or his facial expressions that really make Jason.
Steve Newlin scolding poor Emma was funny too. I don’t think Steve will be around long but he makes me giggle in his scenes.

Lafayette doing the bridesmaid walk while delivering the food was hilarious also. Isn’t Andy’s gf’s name Holly though?
I can’t believe there are only two more episodes, seems like it just started.

Oh, I miss Godric

Super sad episode.

They killed off Mike the Coroner with so little fanfare, and he’s been around since the beginning. (Same for Sheriff Bud last week.) New characters fared no better, with WhatsHisFace McWhinyVamp (the new sheriff) biting it (pardon the pun). And despite her small level of celebrity and high likability, the techie vamp Molly didn’t do any better, possibly just to show that the Authority means business. Russell Edgington makes an awesome villain.

Then they essentially wrote Hoyt off the show. I know he was hurting, but why would he want to forget his oldest friend Jason entirely? Couldn’t Jessica have just glamoured him to forget what happened? Just a hurtful, selfish thing to do, and seeing it was kind of painful. I was also thinking about Eternal Sunshine, which is my favorite movie.

All in all, a major installment in the series’ lore, and it reaffirmed my emotional attachment to the show.

My bad…I meant to say Holly. (none of it is accurate according to the books which tends to confuse me at times, so nice catch).

I hope Steve Newlin isn’t killed off, but I could see it.

I also hope Hoyt isn’t leaving the show because I really like him. But I don’t think his action was hurtful and selfish. What Jess & Jason did to him was the hurtful, selfish act. Why should he continue to be punished for what they did? Though I know what you’re saying.

I’m not saying wanting to forget what happened was unreasonable, and since Jessica was so tied up in that, even wanting to forget her is understandable. But wanting to entirely forget who Jason is, his best friend since they were kids together… that’s not right. Forget what he did, so that you can move on, but don’t forget him entirely.

It will be interesting to see if somehow they can take it back (can they unglamour someone if they want?) or if in fact Hoyt did leave the show. My friend said he’s on another show now, so maybe he wanted written out?

I did feel bad for Jason when he pulled him over and he didn’t know him. As someone who’s had a best friend I’ve known since I was 12, I can’t imagine what that would be like.

They did manage to establish that you can unglamour someone this season (the guy who witnessed Russell’s exhuming), so if they ever bring back Hoyt, that’d be the way. But I can’t see that happening. That’s the completion of a character arc right there.
